Thomas Coats Memorial from the roadside By Karen Brodie

COATS MEMORIAL CHURCH The Coats Memorial Church is one of Europe’s finest Baptist Churches, commissioned by the family of Thomas Coats of Ferguslie in his memory. As one of the founders of J & P Coats Threadmakers, he was an influential businessman who created the world famous thread empire. Built in 1894, its steeple rises to 240ft and has an open crown of eight arches and a lantern pinnacle. Inside there are items of stunning craftsmanship such as intricate oak wood carvings. The vaulted ceiling is decorated with angels playing harps and holding banners bearing scriptural quotations and there is a black veined white marble baptistry along with many more interesting features.
